Assess anticoagulation status of patients treated with Pradaxa to determine bleeding risk in cases of suspected overdose or presentation to emergency departments

Excessive anticoagulation may require temporary discontinuation of Pradaxa

Evaluation of anticoagulant activity

  • Close correlation between plasma concentration of Pradaxa and degree of anticoagulant effect
  • Half-life of Pradaxa is 1214 hours, after which 80\% of Pradaxa is renally cleared; will be prolonged accordingly in patients with renal impairment
  • Response depends on time blood sample was taken in relation to last administered dose
  • Qualitative measure: activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), ecarin clotting time (ECT), or thrombin time (TT)
  • Quantitative measure: only the calibrated HEMOCLOT thrombin inhibitor assay is available
  • Note: standard treatment with Pradaxa does not need routine clinical monitoring to assess anticoagulation

There is currently no antidote to Pradaxa

Click on the buttons below to review the coagulation tests for assessing the activity of Pradaxa and the appropriate management of bleeding.
