I'm not sure why your kernel is crashing. Android is stable for me on the Overo Tide with the Palo43 board. I'm using 2.6.32, which is the one that comes with the default images ( http://wiki.gumstix.org/index.php?title=Android_Gingerbread). If I had to guess I would say try the newer kernel because it has the support for the SGX driver code.
