Thanks, finally it was the pmem initialization. I had missed to apply a
machine specific patch as part of the fixup_mxc_board.
It helped to focus on the kernel with the assurance that user space had no
obvious issues.

After uboot loads the kernel into memory, are you able to see the penguin?
Can you also print the dmesg ? Check if you are not mounting the partitions
in a wrong way.

Porting Android Froyo 2.2 to a Freescale MX51 based board. Kernel
boots fine, some errors in logcat that I can live with for the moment,
but no GUI. I have seen the penguin on the framebuffer at bootup so I
know the LCD is working.
I also see the Android letters and the blinkering cursor.
Did you check Freescale patches ?
