Also check that you have the folder data/misc/wifi/sockets created.
This is used by wpa_ctrl. When I read No such file or directory I
kept thinking it must be the socket file wlan0, but it ended up being
that particular directory which is used by wpa_ctrl as a local socket
directory.

I also faced this problem..
1. Check the path that you gave in supplicant.conf and the one that is
there in hardware/libhardware/wifi/wifi.c. Both should match..
2. eth1 should have appropriate persmissions. so in the
supplicant.conf ctrl_interface_group should be system.
