AP. 5 March 2003. Thousands of Swedish students march against possible
war in Iraq.

STOCKHOLM -- Thousands of Swedish high school students skipped class
Wednesday to demonstrate against plans for a war against Iraq.

About 5,000 students gathered for a peaceful rally in downtown Stockholm
before marching through the city with banners reading "Stop the War,"
and "Fight U.S. Imperialism."

"A war won't help create democracy. It only creates more hatred and
kills innocent people," said 18-year-old Viktor Risling, one of the
organizers.

Rock music blasted from loudspeakers as young peace activists called for
U.S. President George W. Bush to stop the buildup for war.

Some of the students had been given time off from school. Others, like
Ainor Bruun, 19, skipped class to join the demonstration.

"I don't think Bush has the right to come into Iraq and bomb for oil,"
she said. "Millions of children will die."

At one point, police monitoring the march were pelted with batteries,
but no one was injured and no arrests were made, police spokesman Janne
Hedlund said.

Smaller demonstrations were scheduled in other Swedish cities, including
Goteborg, the Scandinavian country's second largest city.
