Armenia Center Offers Land Mine Aid
Sat Mar 16, 9:09 PM ET
YEREVAN, Armenia - A U.S.-funded center to train
Armenians in clearing land mines opened Saturday in
what U.S. officials said was just the first concrete
example of increasing military cooperation with this
former Soviet republic.
U.S. Ambassador John Ordway said Washington has set
aside $4.3 million in military aid for the tiny
Caucasus Mountains nation, where land mines are a
deadly legacy of conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan
over Nagorno-Karabakh, a mostly ethnic Armenian
enclave in Azerbaijan.
"This is an investment in the future here in Armenia,"
Ordway said.
Armenia offered to let U.S. warplanes fly over its
territory during the fighting in Afghanistan About 65
Armenians will be trained in deactivating mines in the
next three months at he center in Echmiadzin, 15 miles
west of the capital, Yerevan, said Mikael Arutyunian,
deputy defense minister and chief of general staff of
the Armenian military.
Armenian officials said tens of thousands of land
mines are believed to lie along Armenia's border with
Azerbaijan. Many are not marked on maps and they often
kill soldiers and civilians.
Backed by Armenia, separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh won
control over the region and some adjacent areas in a
six-year war that killed 30,000 people. Despite a 1994
cease-fire, a political settlement remains elusive,
and tensions between the bitter neighbors are high.
