Ananova : Chinese court jails American engineer ========================= A Chinese court has sentenced an American electrical engineer to five years in prison for obtaining state secrets and giving bribes. The two years Fong Fuming has already spent in detention will be deducted from his prison term, a US embassy spokesman said. Fong, of West Orange, New Jersey, was acquitted by the Beijing No 1 Intermediate People's Court of other bribery and state secrets charges, said the spokesman. A court official responsible for the case confirmed a verdict had been reached but refused to disclose details. The court spokesman's office did not respond to requests for information. Fong was accused of obtaining secret documents from a state power official and giving out $245,000 in bribes. He was among a series of US citizens and residents charged over the past two years with violating Chinese national security laws. United States has repeatedly protested over the handling of Fong's case, saying Chinese courts violated international standards by holding him for months without indicting him. The embassy spokesman said Fong will be deported after his sentence is served. An embassy diplomat was present at the sentencing, as was a member of Fong's family. The spokesman refused to give other details, citing privacy rules. Fong, a former employee of the Chinese power industry, advises foreign firms on power projects in China and elsewhere in Asia. He became a US citizen in 1994. His wife and two sons also are US citizens. Fong denied paying bribes and argued that the power official who allegedly gave him secret documents was trying to extort money from him.
