Rakhimov, 49, was hit by five bullets as he was leaving his house in the capital city Dushanbe before he died, the news agency said, citing the police. Tajikistan's politics have been marred by violence since its independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. President Emomali Rakhmonov has been attracting Islamic leaders to the government over the past three years as part of the 1997 settlement of a five-year civil war between his supporters and opposition groups. Deputy Security Minister Shamsullo Dzhabirov, who was shot dead in February 2000, was among several state officials killed since independence. In April, Deputy Interior Minister Khabib Sanginov was shot dead by unidentified gunmen. Militants aren't the only cause of instability in Tajikistan. Fighting between criminal gangs in Dushanbe for control of the narcotics trade is also destabilizing the country. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
