>
>WASHINGTON: India has ruled out any US mediation to resolve the Kashmir issue while at the same time crediting the Bush Administration with exerting pressure on Pakistan to abandon terrorism.
>
> Summing up his visit to Washington, where he met top American leaders, Home Minister L K Advani, in separate interviews to The Washington Post and Baltimore Sun, said India, backed by a broad national consensus, would oppose any American effort to mediate in the Kashmir issue.
>
> With US officials headed by President George W Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell urging India to seek a solution through dialogue with Pakistan, Advani made it clear that mere words from Pervez Musharraf would not be enough.
>
> "India," said Advani, "will judge Pakistan and its leader not by the speech but by the action that accompanies the speech."
>
> Advani credited the Bush Admiistration with exerting pressure on Pakistan to "abandon the path of terrorism."
>
> Commenting on Musharraf's anticipated speech, commended in advance by Powell, Advani said, "We will wait. We will watch. But what I can emphasise is cynicism and skepticism about Musharraf is intense in India. Statements are not going to suffice unless accompanied by action."
>
> Advani said the Pakistani President should find it relatively easy to suppress anti-Indian militants compared with his decision to break ties with Taliban which Pakistan had helped create and long supported. [enditem]
