Bulgaria Bans Anti-Turkey Protest March of Kurds
SOFIA, Mar 20, 2002 -- (dpa) Bulgaria followed
Romania's lead and refused to allow Kurdish
demonstrators to march through its territory and hold
demonstrations on the border with Turkey, local media
reported Wednesday.
The authorities based their decision on a 1992
friendship treaty with Turkey.
Around 200 Kurds on a protest march from western
Europe were previously stranded for more than 20 hours
on the Hungarian-Romanian border, the national radio
said.
The march, which started in Brussels, was organized by
the Kurdish PKK party under the motto "language
without borders". PKK has been banned in several
European countries.
Participants wanted to hold demonstrations on the
Turkish border, in a push for more rights,
particularly the recognition of the Kurdish language.
Kurds living in Bulgaria said they would join the
protest at the border.
