PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD BANK: UZBEKISTAN NEEDS NATIONAL CURRENCY CONVERSION APRIL 13, 2002 RIA NOVOSTI World Bank President James Wolfensohn urged Uzbekistan to undertake measures to ensure national currency conversion. He stated on Saturday at a press conference in Tashkent in the wake of his visit to Central Asia that it was required for the republic to become competitive in foreign markets. In Uzbekistan the head of the World Bank was received by Islam Karimov, President of the republic. In the course of their meeting the parties stated "successful development of cooperation" between Tashkent and the World Bank. Wolfensohn stressed the importance "of more decisive and comprehensive structural reforms." This cooperation was initiated in 1992 and was especially tangible in the last years during which the World Bank allocated USD 494 million to Uzbekistan to implement a number of projects. In 2002-2004 the Board of directors of the World Bank approved financing of projects in Uzbekistan for the amount of USD 350 million. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
