NATO and transatlantic relations: Albright highlights way forward

On 16 December, Dr Madeleine Albright, Chairperson of the Group of Experts on
NATO’s new Strategic Concept, delivered a keynote speech on the way forward for
transatlantic relations at a public event in Brussels.

Speaking to an audience of some 400 Brussels-based policy makers and opinion
leaders, the former US State Secretary addressed a broad spectrum of challenges
facing the transatlantic partnership, looking in particular at the process of
developing NATO’s new Strategic Concept, and the Alliance’s future engagements.

“NATO continues to be indispensable,” Dr Albright said in her speech. She
explained that with the Washington Treaty’s Article 5 on collective defence at
its core, the Alliance is the foundation of the transatlantic partnership,
contributing significantly to international security. “Since its creation, NATO
has been a central component of the transatlantic partnership.”

Dr Albright also touched on the role of the transatlantic partnership in
addressing challenges such as climate change and the emergence of new global
players.

The new Strategic Concept should provide direction on how to make full use of
NATO’s strengths, she said, including the Alliance’s contribution to a
comprehensive approach to international crisis management.

The event was jointly organized by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division and the
German Marshall Fund (GMF) of the United States, and moderated by Dr Ron Asmus,
the Executive Director of GMF’s Brussels office.
