I just compiled an svn version and I get
mod_apreq2-20050712/2.5.6-dev
That should be
2.0.7-dev
I would guess rc3 does something similiar. I've also seen someone else post
about this maybe on modperl@, and with v 2.1.3 I think.

All tests OK here (WinXP/VC6, perl-5.8.7, apache-2.0.54, mp-2.0.2-rc2).
