Thanks for the feedback on my questions.  

Clarences suggestions vis. changing arachne.cfg to access the mail on one
provider while connected via the other worked like a charm both ways; I now
have 4 copies of arachne.cfg--two for normal connections to my two providers,
plus two more for 'cross downloading' of email.

Sam H, I tested what you said about not being able to get in through the
'back door' of a provider if the 'front door' (normal dial up) is busy.  I
found that during peak times on the free provider (when I would get endless
busy signals trying to dial up), I could always log in via the the other
provider, but the service would be slow.  My guess is that (on this provider
at least), it's because internet traffic requests can be queued whereas modem
connection requests either make it or they don't.

Sam E,  Naaawww I understand about the free email services ... think I'll
get one myself!
