ry, I missed that you had suggested commenting out the alsa
entries as well.
Everything is loading correctly now. See what happens when you admin a
machine on little to no sleep?!

That is correct, you don't mount an audio CD to listen to it. The playback
program just accesses the block device directly IIRC.

Pretty much everyone has switched over to x.org, IIRC debian is planning
on moving eventually too, it's just going to take them a long time with
their glacial release pattern :)
Personally I haven't run XFree in a year or so, and I have an ATI card
in a laptop.
