Logical though perhaps not very useful thing to do is to check the
changelog. Hrm?

For nvidia I use the snd_intel8x0 and for Soundblaster snd_emu10k1.
Both modules are without problems in PCs which I have upgraded.

Same issue with snd-intel8x0. Tried uninstalling and re-installing all
the necessary alsa libraries without resolution. Everything looks good
- just no sound.

Interesting! I don't have the screeching and squawking, just
silence, but maybe some random manipulations with channels in
"alsamixer" may do the trick. Thanks, I'll try that.
But what I can't figure out is why it all works if I just downgrade
the kernel.

I normally boot into runlevel 3 and then use "startx" to run Xfce.
It doesn't work in either case, meaning in the console or in X.

Does it work when you only boot into runlevel 3? I had similar problem, my
soundcard was working fine in 'console' but after i started KDE all sounds
got muted.

Not stupid at all! Good idea. But I tried that before and after the
downgrade. Both "Master" and "PCM," the important channels, are not
muted. Of course, "Line" and some other channels are muted but that
makes no difference when running under kernel 2.6.12 where sound
works correctly.
And I just confirmed that doing only this:
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.12.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
... and yet another restart (i.e. downgrading) fixes all the problems
I'm having with sound. So it's likely that there's either a bug in
the 2.16.13 kernel, the new alsa modules
I know that's a stupid idea, but just for sure - have you tried
alsamixer and are you sure that there is not a muted channel?

That's happened to me once before, when I ran out of space on my root

i hope pacman stays like it is and doesn't mimic apt-get. At home i use Arch
but our school uses Ubuntu. Pacman, for me, is much easier to use and figure
out. Apparently my staff agrees and now they want me to install arch on their
computers.

Sounds like a good idea!
I know that apt-get has something called dist-upgrade, that's supposed to be
used when one upgrades a whole lot of packages (or while migrating from woody
to sarge) - I'm not sure how it works tho.
Is there any pacman feature wishlist? :)

I would recommend splitting up the upgrade process using pacman. I
didn't and it really frakked up my system. Suddenly it started
complaining about too many open files, in which shadow and pam were
screwed, so I couldn't login anymore.
