It is easier to add the demon "alsa" to rc.conf. It store and loads the
mixer-volumes automatically.

you might need to add
options snd-via82xx index=0 dxs_support=4
or something like it at the top of whatever alsa
decides you need in modprobe.conf the dxs stuff sorts
out horrid distortion and breakthru effects. That came
from the list at the alsa site. there are other things
you might want to add
Add your user to 'audio' group, that should set up your permissions correctly.
