It can certainly be done. You can always do a pacman -Su later, if
you want.
The problem is that I want to check for updates in a script. 'pacman
-Sy' without upgrade can cause problems.
In your use case, you can probably specify an alternative db path
using the --dbpath switch in pacman.

That's what I wanted to do, but dbpath countains the local and upstream
databases, so I thought it might cause

Ok, thanks for info and help. If I will have other issue I will downgrade it
to A05 but now it looks ok on A08 :) I'm really happy that I don't need
windows and can normally work on Arch linux :)

My Win 7 VM (64bit on 64bit host) crashes under 4.3.16.
It works again after rolling back to 4.3.14.
Ifound some noise on the net with others having similar issues
(e.g. https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7t=63607)
For now I am back to 4.3.14.
