We are talking about runtime dependencies here, not build or test. core/ should be selfcontained, packages in core/ only depend on other core/ packages. All packages can depend on /core since its considered mandatory. Hence the name, you can run arch with just this repo. extra/ is maintained by

To remove any doubts, just take a look at /proc/cpuinfo. With 4 cores and 8 threads, I have 8 entries in there. The processor is ranging from 0 to 7 (aka threads) while core id (aka cores) from 0 to 3. If you grep it, it will (kinda) give you the thread-core mapping. % grep processor\|core id
