i can't quite believe that i'm having to route my vpn access over an
ssh tunnel in order to then put HTTP proxy over the VPN in order to
get frickin internet access to my email and anything at all.

That would really set the device apart Andrew. I searched for a camera that
saves video in webm once. I could only find the Elphel camera, which is
expensive and requires further work to make it usable as a stand-alone cam.
