Music: 'Slumdog Millionaire' soundtrack

(N.E.E.T./Interscope)

Sri Lankan-British rapper-provocateur M.I.A.'s idea of clout remains novel
and idiosyncratic, as evinced by this collection from "Slumdog Millionaire."
Part soundtrack, part score, the album is largely a showcase for the work of
A.R. Rahman, perhaps the most prolific of all Indian film composers. While
recording "Kala," M.I.A. worked in Rahman's studio, though the two didn't
collaborate until now, on "O Saya." Neither one gives an inch, though:
Rahman's production and vocals are characteristically spectral and
ambitious, and M.I.A.'s verse, parachuted in midsong, is casually political,
assertive and nonsensical.
