Music Review: 'Couples Retreat' by A.R. Rahman
October 03 2009 11:45 PST

The Hollywood movie "Couples Retreat" is set for release on October 9. The film
stars Vince Vaughn, Kristen Bell, Faizon Love, and many more. "Couples Retreat"
is a comedy that follows four couples who are all at a tropical resort, going
through therapy sessions and learning about their relationships. With all these
emotions, an exotic location, and a comedic tone, A.R. Rahman set out to
compose the album’s soundtrack. What We Think:
With track titles like "Jason and Cynthia Suite" and "Tour of the Villas," it
is understandable that the music has been composed to compliment the scene in
which it will be placed, as Hollywood movies always do. With four couples from
different walks of life, the soundtrack contains a wide range of instruments
and music styles. A.R. Rahman not only shines on his classical Indian music
selections, but the orchestra on "Jason and Cynthia Suite" and "Itinerary" is
phenomenal!
Songs like "Nana" and "Kurukuru Kan (Afro Nisha)" take on very ethnic, island
vibes that are complimentary to the film’s setting. For the South Asian ear,
tracks like "Undress" and "Intervention" have familiar A.R. Rahman instruments
and sounds.
Final Verdict
A.R. Rahman has put together yet another masterpiece! Every song has its story,
its own sound, and its own mood. With 15 tracks we would think that one would
fall flat, but we couldn’t seem to find one. A.R. Rahman has incorporated
musical styles and instruments from around the globe, showing how diverse his
talents can be. Judging by the soundtrack, "Couples Retreat" will do well in
theaters. We recommend this soundtrack to everyone; whether you are in the mood
for emotional and diverse music or just want to support A.R. Rahman, this
soundtrack is worth checking out.
