Melbourne Concert - '3D effects' review + other misc. details

The heavily promoted '3D concert' opened with a bang during the
opening number 'Fanaa'. As ARR rendered the song, we could see
several 'star wars' like special effects on the large screen through
our 3D glasses. It started off with a fly over view of the 'Earth'
(similar to the view from the Space Shuttles') and then a fly over
across some other planet (cant remember exactly), then finally we had
some star wars like space crafts flying all over the screen. It
looked nice on screen.

The 3D effects used for the 'Ghanan Ghanan' Lagaan piece was also very
apt - rain clouds moving on screen, rain pouring down, the dry desert,
etc. It was nice.

The 3D theme for Thee Thee (Thiruda Thiruda) was a pair of fish
quickly swimming under water. The speed of the fish's swim tried to
match the pace of the song. It was not brilliant, but good enough.

The 3D effects on screen for the other songs were average to poor.
There was just some random patterns on screen which didn't really look
3D so no one bothered to wear the 3D glasses for most part of the show.

To summarise, the 3D effects were nice for the opening number 'Fanaa'
(I liked the solar system fly-over kind of effects, but not the Star
Wars X-Wings flying around), the 'Ghanan Ghanan' Rain Clouds 3D theme
was very nice, Thee Thee had decent 3D effects, but the rest of the
performances did not have matching 3D effects which was a
disappointment. If you keep in mind that it's a new attempt by ARR,
then you'll enjoy it, but dont go in with very high hopes for 3D effects.

Other Misc. Details
===================

Film Director Shankar was present at the concert. He was sitting in
the VIP area and AR Rahman mentioned to the crowd that Shankar had
come down to Melbourne to watch his concert for the first time.

The all time concert favourite, 'Dil Se Re', was not sung by ARR ! I
thought this song would definitely be performed but it wasn't!
Instead, ARR sang numbers from Ah Aah, Yuva, Bombay & Swades.

All the singers were very much 'in key'. Alka rendered Saanwariya and
O Re Chori perfectly, as did Sadhna, Hariharan, Chitra, etc for their
numbers. They were almost flawless! AR Rahman sang Aararai Kodi (Ah
Aah) extremely well, his vocals were also very good in Fanaa, Kabhi
Neem Neem (Yuva), Kehna Hi Kya(Bombay) and Humma Humma. The only
strong that AR Rahman sounded off-key was in 'Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera', it
was good but didn't quite match up to the recorded version.

'O Re Chori' (Lagaan) was performed as an 'unplugged' version, with
ARR on the piano and Alka Yagnik signing the main chorus in minor
variations. Since there were no other backing instruments other than
ARR's piano, the song's beautiful melody stood out along with Alka's
amazing vocal skills.

'Hariharan' was simply amazing in his 'unplugged' rendition of 'Nila
Kaigirathu' from Indhira. Sadhan Sargman was also great with her
unplugged 'Udhaya Udhaya' (the melody came out very well).

When ARR perfomed the poverty athem, someone in the crowd came out
with the great idea of using the backlight on their mobile phone to
wave as if it were a candle. It didn't take long before the whole
crowd were waving their mobile phones (with the backlights on) and it
looked beautiful ! Do try this out when you attend the concert!!

AR Rahman's band was fairly small (I remember his LA concert had a
very large band of performers), but still the band pulled out an
amazing performance.

Kailash Kher performed all of Sukhwinders Singh's usual numbers
(Chaiyya Chaiyaa, Chinamma Chilakamma, etc). Kailash was a suitable
replacement and measured up very well.

Chitra did a great job with Jiya Jale and it was comparable to Lata's
great rendition of the number!

Udit's replacement was some member from the chorus (not sure of his
name, possibly a new singer), he was good in his renditions of Aahista
Aahista, Yuh Hi Chala Chal, etc, but it would be unfair to compare him
to Udit, because Udit is so far ahead in his singing capabilities.

These two girls from the Chorus (not sure of their names, possibly
from Channel V's Super Singer competition??), were amazing in their
performaces of Rangeela Re, Sa Re Ga Me, etc. The new talent show
cased at the concert was of very high quality. I was expecting an
average concert due to the lack of key singers, but somehow everyone
managed to do such an excellent job that it didn't feel so bad, infact
it was excellent!
