*Top 10 People in Music*

*[image: AR Rahman]1.A R Rahman *
*Rank 2008: 1*
*What He Did:* If God ever decide to make a musical, he would hire Rahman as
the composer. So it’s a no-brainer that he’s been the numero uno in this
list for so long. In 2009, he stamped his supremacy with the fabulous score
of Delhi 6, which took us on the wings of pigeons, away from our daily hopes
and heartaches.
*Future Projects:* Shankar’s Endhiran, Abbas Tyrewala’s 1-800 Love, Imtiaz
Ali’s Rockstar and Shekhar Kapur’s Paani are on the cards as of now.
*Filmfare Tip:* We would love to hear you more, sir. Please take on more
playback assignments.
*Filmfare Awards:* 25 (14 for Hindi films)

*[image: Pritam]2.Pritam*
*Rank 2008: 4*
*What He Did: *Pritam is like a long-distance runner, someone who doesn’t
care for milestones but revels only in his running. He continued his bull
run in films like Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Aa Dekhe Zara,
De Dana Dan, New York and Tum Mile.
*Future Projects:* Pritam remains the busiest music director in 2010 too,
with projects like Mohit Suri’s Crook, Abbas-Mustan’s Race 2, Pankaj Kapur’s
Mausam and Anees Bazmee’s No Problem in his kitty.
*Filmfare Tip:* You’ve started repeating yourself and that’s not a good
thing. Think out of the box and bring more zing to your work now.
*Filmfare Awards:* None

*[image: SEL]3.Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy*
*Rank 2008:* 2
*What They Did: *S-E-L inclusion in this list is a testimony to the fact
that you can thrive as a team despite having different styles and taste in
music. They continued to experiment with each film. Instead of going for a
signature sound, they are going for a project-oriented feel to the music.
Wake Up Sid is a case in point – good music and different from the other in
appeal and texture. Karthik Calling Karthik and London Dreams were other
highlights of 2009.
*Future Projects:* Abinay Deo’s Delhi Belly, Anees Bazmee’s It’s My Life,
Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House, Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2 and Siddharth
Malhotra’s We Are Family are some of the films they are working on.
*Filmfare Tip: *What can we say, except don’t give up experimenting and try
to be more eccentric than you guys currently are.
*Filmfare Awards:* 3

*[image: Vishal-Shekhar]4.Vishal - Shekhar*
*Rank 2008: *3
*What They Did:* They may have taken a hiatus doing TV shows but they didn’t
fade away from public memory. They kept a firm balance on the surfboard of
perception despite having only a dud Aladin to their credit in 2009. The
film’s music didn’t do justice to their talent but thankfully, the fact
didn't go unnoticed.
*Future Projects:* They might have lost their way a bit but have already
made a wham bam comeback with the pulsating music of I Hate Luv Storys. They
also have Anubhav Sinha’s Ra.One, Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakta Charitra,
Siddharth Anand’s Anjaana Anjaani, Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan and Dansih
Aslam’s Break Ke Baad in 2010. So they may well improve on the numbers game
next year.
*Filmfare Tip:* Maybe you guys should form a band together with S-E-L and
jolt the music industry out of its complacency.
*Filmfare Awards:* 1

*[image: Gulzar]5.Gulzar*
*Rank 2008: *None
*What They Did:* Gulzar has been making us fall in love with poetry since he
wrote Mora gora ang lai le for Bandini in the 50s. No wonder he is a contant
fixture in the power list. He made us go back to our first love in Dil to
bachcha hai ji (Ishqiya) and earlier made us taste some acid in Aaja aaja
dil nichode (Kaminey) …these two examples are enough to prove that Gulzar’s
poetry is more in sync with times than his years.
*Future Projects:* He is busy weaving his magic for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat
Khoon Maaf.
*Filmfare Tip:* Don’t change, ever!
*Filmfare Awards:* 19

*[image: Salim-Sulaiman]6.Salim-Sulaiman*
*Rank 2008:* 7
*What They Did:* The musical duo have been making waves as prolific
composers since last few years and stamped their entry in the power list
this year with films like Kurbaan, Luck, Teen Patti etc in their kitty.
*Future Projects:* They have Walt Disney’s live action-animation film Yodha
in the pipeline.
*Filmfare Tip:* Okay, you guys, the football season is over. Now get over
the euphoria of composing the FIFA anthem and get cracking on new film
projects.
*Filmfare Awards:* 1

*[image: Javed Akhtar]7.Javed Akhtar*
*Rank 2008: *None
*What He Did:* One of our most respected writers, Javed saab’s verses have
become part of our mindscape. The wordsmith forged new ditties in films like
Karthik Calling Karthik, Luck By Chance and Wake Up Sid among others. Peppy,
zany, in tune with the times lyrics continue to flow from the lyricist’s
pen.
*Future Projects: *Son Farhan’s Don 2, Ashutosh Gowariker’s Khelenge Hum Jee
Jaan Sey, and daughter Zoya’s Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara are some of the films
he’s working on.
*Filmfare Tip:* A musical perhaps, sir, with you writing both script and
lyrics.
*Filmfare Awards: *16

*[image: Prasoon Joshi]8.Prasoon Joshi*
*Rank 2008:* None
*What He Did:* Prasoon Joshi is one of the young guns staking his claim to
the music market. His name is associated with pithy, meaningful lyrics and
he is slowly emerging as the third option to the Gulzar-Javed nexus. His
Masakali (Delhi-6) buoyed us on the wings of doves. Other notable films
include Sikander and London Dreams.
*Future Projects:* He’s written the lyrics for Danish Aslam’s Break Ke Baad.
*Filmfare Tip:* We know you’re busy Prasoon, making ads and all that jazz
but take some more time off to write lyrics too.
*Filmfare Awards:* 2

*[image: Bhushan Kumar]9.Bhushan Kumar (T-Series)*
*Rank 2008: *None
*What He Did: *The fact remains that T-Series is pretty much the most stable
music label there is. So Bhushan Kumar‘s inclusion in this list is a
no-brainer. His banner belted out mostly all the good OSTs you heard in 2009
– films like 3 Idiots, London Dreams, Kites…the works.
*Future Projects:* Films like Priyadarshan’s Khatta Meetha and Anees
Bazmee’s Ready are in the pipeline.
*Filmfare Tip:* Err… keep acquiring more films,
we guess.
*Filmfare Awards:* None.

*[image: Sonu Nigam]10.Sonu Niigaam*
*Rank 2008: *5
*What He Did:* Sonu Niigaam may have become a recluse but he still retains a
place in the hearts of the people. He gave us the peppy numbers, Don’t say
alvida (Main Aur Mrs Khanna) and Chiggy wiggy (Blue), the nostalgic Zoobi
doobi (3 Idiots) and the straight from the heart Shukran Allah (Kurbaan) but
they served as appetisers rather than the main course.
Future Projects: He’s busy with TV and his South projects. Besides that,
he’s released a tribute album to Michael Jackson.
*Filmfare Tip:* You know what they say, out of sight, out of mind. So please
come back to the Hindi playback arena.
*Filmfare Awards:* 4 (Hindi: 2, South: 2)
