I don't fault Rahman at all. It's a period score afterall. It requires a special approach to composing beyond typical bollywood naach gaana songs. Given the movie, I think Rahman did a FANTASTIC job with the songs. So classical, haunting, intricate, with extraordinary arrangements. It's the type of album that will satisfy most Rahman fans, however, because of its classy nature and intricacy, it will have a difficult time being appreciated by the common man. The exception would be unless the movie was a hit. Unfortunately, most of the North Indian public find Nadeem Shravan's cheesy, romantic, stale sounding songs appealing. They like light and easy listening with only simple melodies without having to think too much. I am glad Rahman does not compose those type of tunes, yet, I feel he needs a hit album soon. It's been a long time since his music has sold extremely well. We will appreciate Mangal Pandey's music a lot, but will the public? To be seen, but I have my doubts. Does that matter? Yes and No.
