| If you assumed that guitar breaking rock had the only cult
following among youngsters you might want to do a rethink. The least expected of
topics, education, is the current obsession. At least that’s as far as the
success of this one song is concerned - ‘Pathshala’. Be it science practicals or Newton’s theory of gravity, lyricist Prasoon Joshi’s ‘Pathshala’ from ‘Rang de Basanti’, breaks all stereotypes of a typical Hindi song. It purely targets the young audience. “Nowadays if you even utter the word pathshala it’s considered downmarket; not ‘cool’ enough. That is precisely why I took it up as the main theme of the song, because I know that the youth will accept anything that is unconventional and well crafted,” he says. The song, being played at almost every music store, radio station, auto rickshaw and even college festivals, has become a medium for youngsters to express ideas about a fun life. Revealing that the song was meant to set a trend Prasoon adds, “There are a whole lot of clichés surrounding young mindsets today. Especially that they accept anything that is western. In the process the Indianess in them is taken for granted. I wanted to prove that a non-superficial song like this will inspire youngsters to be trendsetters, not followers.” Apart from talking about leading a fun-filled life, the song also subtly incorporates a trace of poetic sensibility. “A line like ‘Natta yeh sannata hai’, metaphorically speaks of the naïve silence within each of us. The fact the audience relates to these lyrics shows that they are very much open to experimentation,” he explains. Quiz the advertising professional about tapping into the pulse of his audience so flawlessly via his song, and he says, “Advertising constantly involves understanding the consumer psyche and in a way I can say it contributes a lot to the kind of lyrics I write. But ultimately it is the passion from within that allows you to dig into your mind and come up with something like ‘Pathshala’. So all you youngsters out there - Be simple but inventive.
