======================================= >From the the October 17 issue of Two River Times, Story and Photo by Andy McDonough Norman Seldin's new CD set "Asbury Park Then And Now" features some of the Jersey Shore's finest musicians. Who can tell what will make the history books and what won't? Local musician and music producer, Stormin' Norman Seldin seems to have an idea. His two-CD collection of the music of Asbury Park is being played worldwide. "It's crazy," says Seldin, holding up a list of the top ten hits of a popular German radio station. Two cuts from his CD by Barbaroso and The Historians are among the top hits for Rockin' Rollin' Rheinwelle this week. "We're getting requests for this music," he says, "from around the world!" Seldin knows the shore music scene, perhaps better than anyone, having been active as a player and producing concerts since his early teens. With the exception of tours to the Mississippi Delta and some large venues where he has shared the stage with greats including Roy Orbison, The Temptations and Jackie Wilson, Seldin has been a regular on the shore music scene with his bands. In addition to his early bands, like The Soul Set, he has recorded over the years with some of the shore's best known acts, including The Valtairs, Nicky Addeo, The Uniques, Tony Maples, The Shondells, Babaroso and the Historians, and the Motifs, managing many of their scheduled appearances. Always producing and recording music, in the 1980s Seldin hit the recording studio with many of the area's best players, including a few who have gone on to receive international acclaim either as members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band or with formidable acts of their own, like Southside Johnny Lyon. Those sessions were never released until Seldin compiled them with classic recordings from the Asbury scene and some current recordings on Asbury Park Then and Now. The CD set boasts 46 cuts with some famous personnel, but also some of the local artists who stayed behind to keep the Jersey shore music scene alive. "We have well over 250 hours of digital remastering invested in this project," says Seldin, "But it is worth it to hear some of these great songs again sounding so good again." In addition to classic Doo Wop sounds on the CD set, Springsteen fans will find eight never-before-heard recordings with E Street Band members Garry Tallent, Clarence Clemons, Max Weinberg, the late Danny Federici, and Roy Bittan, from 1980s recording sessions. Seldin sings lead, with local guitar legend, Billy Ryan, on guitar and harmony on "I Wanna Rock 'n' Roll" by Southside Johnny. Plus, you can hear Clarence Clemons' first studio session with Seldin's band, Joyful Noyze. There are also features by Nicky Addeo, the Motifs, the Jaywalkers and more. In a new book from Rutgers Press, Local Heroes, author Anders Martensson and photographer Jorgen Johansson focus on the myths, legends, and romantic visions of Asbury's music scene. The book delves into the backgrounds of the widely popular artists, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, and Southside Johnny Lyon, whose names are now inseparable from the town that launched their careers, but the author also devotes seven pages to Seldin and his bands that helped to forge what became known as the Jersey Shore sound - what some have come to call SOAP or the Sound of Asbury Park. Asbury Park Then and Now is available locally at Seldin's Trinkets, 2 West Front St. Red Bank (732-741-6990) or Jack's Music Shoppe 30 Broad St. Red Bank (732-842-0731) or can be ordered online at Amazon.com.
