Inside the Convention Hall arcade yesterday, there was a lot of work taking place. All of the boarded up spaces and closed doors to the small bays (which I assume are for retail spaces) have been completely opened up and gutted, and new wall framing is going up in all of those spaces. Also a new scaffolding was constructed at the north entrance. Some of the lights above (the architectural grid lighting built into the ceiling, not the cheap hanging dome lights) were turned on and it was a bit brighter in there. Also appeared that the marquee above the entrance to Convention Hall (the red white and blue metal sign) was either getting removed or getting work done. Outside, some scaffolding was removed on the south entrance and now there is scaffolding on the north east corner of the upper part of the Paramount Theatre. They are working on the sidewalk along the Ocean Avenue side of the Paramount Theatre. There is also a wall under construction where the parking area is on the north side of the theatre, about 2 1/2 - 3 feet high, matching the brickwork of the building. Looks like they are really working hard to bring this building back to life in time for spring/summer. Sadly, this could have (and should have) been done 3 or 4 years ago.
Some other updates: The new roof on the Carousel House is almost complete. The second floor of HoJos looks like its done or near done, as there are now curtains and light fixtures in place. I just dont understand why they dont start working on finishing the rest of the pavilion. The building still looks like crap (putting it nicely) because of the south half still waiting for some help. I dont care how many paint jobs or retailers that part of the pavilion gets, it wont look good until the rest of the building (the bandshell) is finished. I cant understand why this is being neglected. It cant possibly take too long to rebuild those ramps and get the exterior in shape (I dont know whether the paint can be removed and the old brick exposed, or if it needs to be completely redone... neither would take more than a couple of months). I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. Anyone have any information on this project and why it hasnt moved forward? Yahoo!
