ASBURY PARK — Law enforcement authorities arrested a 71-year-old city man who
they say was selling guns, some of which may have made their way to gang
members.

Authorities on Wednesday seized a cache of guns that include four high-powered
rifles, one sawed-off shotgun and a .22-caliber handgun following a two-month
investigation centered on an apartment in a Washington Avenue house.

The authorities, including members of the Asbury Park police, Monmouth County
Prosecutor's Office, and the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms,
believe James Fentress, 71, was operating a gun distribution network possibly
linked to gun sales to gang members, said Asbury Park Police Capt. Anthony
Salerno.

Authorities said they also seized two body armor protective vests and a
significant amount of ammunition and magazines.

Just after 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, police raided Fentress' apartment at 1317
Washington Ave.

Fentress, whose bail was set at $492,000, was charged with six counts of
possession of a weapon, as well as individual counts of possession of an
assault weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon (the sawed-off shotgun) and
certain persons not to have weapons, a charge that can be lodged against
defendants who have been previously convicted of certain crimes.

His wife, Lucy Fentress, 47, also of the city, was also arrested and charged
with unlawful possession of a rifle. Her bail was set at $70,000.

The couple was being held Thursday morning at the Monmouth County Jail,
Freehold Township, in lieu of bail.
