Maybe they got this increase because of all the AP district students
they have?

RED BANK — The calendars said the borough Board of Education was
going to vote Tuesday night on a preliminary budget for the next
school year, but that didn't happen for a very good and welcome
reason.

An unexpected 18.6 percent increase, or $2.36 million, in state aid
was announced for the district on Monday, the first such increase in
years for a district which in past years has had to scrimp, save and,
during the most lean years, lay off staff.

That means refiguring the budget.

"It represents the highest increase in the state, and it's been long
overdue," said Laura C. Morana, superintendent of schools. "It
enables us to reassess what we're doing for the coming year."

Red Bank was one of 217 districts to receive the largest increases
based on having more than 15 percent of students eligible for free or
reduced-cost lunches, which is one measure of a community's relative
wealth. Those 217 districts are restricted to spending the funds on
literacy programs, preschool and full-day kindergarten.
