LONG BRANCH — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in his
mid-20s at a Second Avenue home, according to sources at the scene.

Long Branch police and the Major Crimes Unit of the Monmouth County
Prosecutor's Office are on the scene of a three-story residential building on
Second
Avenue, near Belmont Avenue. Long Branch police would not describe the nature
of the investigation.

The street is blocked off with police tape, and the two-lane residential
stretch of Second Avenue closed to traffic.

One Second Avenue resident described the block as one filled with regular
street fights. The neighborhood is one of older single-family homes, many of
which have been split into multi-unit buildings.

"I can't even walk on this street at night because I'm scared to death,''
said Misti Strauss, 18, who lives on Second Avenue two doors down from the
crime scene.

Her sister, Barbara Strauss, 20, said she was outside at about 3:30 p.m.
when "police cars started flying down the street and more and more of them
were
coming.

"I saw a body put in an ambulance, which pulled away real slow around
4ish,'' said Barbara Straus, who described the area as a quiet neighborhood
but one
with a lot of drunken fights.

Many neighbors were standing on their front walks and porches looking toward
the crime scene and at the numerous police and detectives investigating.
