Tommy in today's APP. He will take on the BSA and Keady to defend
Italian-American heritage (misplaced) but will take a dive for the
City and Partners. He has still failed to criticize the City and
Partners for GUMBA NIGHT. What's the difference? Cronyism? He knows
which side his bread is buttered on? Say it ain't so Tom, I thought
you were better than that!

You want people with Italian surnames to boycott the BSA, how about
they boycott AP and Partners? Oh right, most of the people who were
insulted already boycotted AP when they took flight years ago. I
know now it is the meesenger and not the message.

"Columbus tale a fabrication

I fear your coverage about Asbury Park's Columbus Day landing may
have put me and 100 other people in a false light. Your article
suggested that we agree Christopher Columbus was a bad guy who
mistreated Indians, but were there so as not to lose our annual
party. Shenanigans.

We were there exuberantly celebrating Columbus and America. We've
done so annually for 50 years. Councilman Jim Keady objected to our
celebration. He read from a book by Howard Zinn, a Marxist who has
made a living criticizing America. He falsely accuses Columbus. Zinn
cites a document written by Francisco de Bobadilla that says
Columbus mistreated Indians, but fails to point out that de
Bobadilla wanted Columbus' governorship and fabricated the stories.
Queen Isabella fired him.

Columbus was not a slave trader, either. After Indians murdered 40
of his men, he captured 500 and sent them to Spain as prisoners of
war. That does not make him a slave trader.

Columbus Day has deep associations for the Italian-American
community. Italians are proud that our contribution to America
includes the voyages of Columbus, the first North American explorer
John Cabot and mapmaker Amerigo Vespucci. We love America and
celebrate with her, not separately.

Every year, the Boy Scouts provide the Indians to greet Columbus in
Asbury Park. This year, they refused, not wanting to "take sides" in
the controversy. By not showing up, they picked a side — against
Columbus, against Italian-Americans and against America.

I encourage all Scout families with Italian surnames to abandon
funding for the Scouts.
