*Documentary Film Screening on “Climate Change” at NEDFI Auditorium*

* *

*Introduction*

Climate change is a big challenge and bigger is its humanitarian
implication in the growing economies like that of India. There is a huge
information and knowledge deficit existing in the areas of environment and
climate change. A strategic, constructive intervention is therefore needed
to bridge the information gaps in these areas.

Therefore, with the objective of sensitizing the citizens on various
aspects of climate change and their effects on human habitat, a series of
documentary films has been produced by TVE - Television for Environment [
http://tve.org] for BBC’s Earth Report. The initiative is supported by
Nokia as a part of their corporate social responsibility.

A screening of TVE’s documentary is being organized at the *NEDFi Auditorium
* at NEDFi House, Dispur, Guwahati on *07th December 2012** at **5.30 pm*.
The duration of screening will be about 1 hour.

*By being aware of the Climate change issues, we can contribute in our own
way in safeguarding our environment for our future generations ! So, please
come, join us, for screening of documentary films on climate change ! ….and
make a difference !.*

*Episode – 1 : Changing Climates: The Science *

This episode of the BBC Earth Report, charts the history of the science of
climate change from the first use of the 'Greenhouse' analogy, as far back
as the 1820s, to describe the warming effect of the atmosphere, right up to
the 1990s with the discovery of the Atlantic conveyor process. Throughout
this time the science of climate change has been fraught with uncertainty,
claim and counterclaim. Unraveling the evolving and often conflicting
theories, Earth Report looks at the key scientific milestones which have
finally brought us to an understanding that humans are affecting the
Earth's climate.

*Episode – 2 : Earth Reporters: Damming the **Mekong** *

The mighty Mekong River flows through six nations and many millions of
people rely on it, directly and indirectly, for food and their livelihoods.
But this region of the world also urgently needs energy to power economic
development. For the Mekong countries it presents a difficult choice:
building hydro-electric dams on the Mekong will risk profound changes to a
major ecosystem. Thitarat Sriwattanapong is researching the future of the
Mekong River and understands better than most, the dilemmas that dam
projects on the river pose to the ambitions of the region

*Episode – 3 : Changing Climates: The Future*

150 years of global industrial development, powered by carbon based fuels
like coal, oil

and gas, have been the driving force behind the world's changing climate.
Reducing the 'Greenhouse Effect' caused by carbon in our atmosphere will
require a global shift away from our reliance on fossil fuels. This Earth
Report in the Changing Climates season looks into the future to assess the
alternatives - both large and small scale, and finds that around the world,
there's no shortage of innovative technological solutions: wave energy in
Scotland; wind power in the Netherlands, and the Philippines; large scale
solar power in Spain and Germany, and small scale solar suited to the needs
of rural South Africa. But perhaps the real challenge for the future will
be bring these clean energy technologies into the mainstream -- if we don't
succeed the world will remain trapped in the carbon age.

*Episode – 4 : Changing Climates: The Politics *

From the groundbreaking Rio Earth Summit in 1992, to the breakdown of the
international climate negotiations in The Hague in 2000, politicians have
struggled to find agreement on firstly, whether the world is warming, and
secondly, a global consensus for action. Today, with international
agreement seemingly as far away as ever, Earth Report tracks the political
ups and downs of what is arguably the world's greatest problem.
