Quality education
It is the best thing to happen on the States education front after the
setting up of the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati. The technical
education scene in the State is going to get the much-needed boost with the
prestigious Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok all set to establish a
centre in the State. The region for long has been crying hoarse for development
of its higher education sector. Lack of proper education infrastructure coupled
with a not so encouraging academic environment has been a bane for the State.
The Asian Institute of Technology also intends to collaborate with the Assam
Engineering College and Jorhat Engineering College for introduction of courses
which would help the students to keep abreast with the latest developments on
the engineering front. The Asian Institute of Technology which is also known
for its expertise in water resource management has been extending its technical
support in controlling the Meckong river in Thailand.
With the State beset with flood and erosion problems, the technical assistance
and courses of the institute will definitely come in handy. Apart from the
technical courses, the State Government has also expressed its willingness to
undertake a wide range of collaborative ventures with the institute. The thrust
areas of the ventures are proposed to include information and communication
technology, infrastructure, disaster management, food and food processing,
rural planning and development and institutional capacity building. Assam will
be the first State in the country to have a centre of the institute. Such
centres have already been set up in countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri
Lanka and Pakistan. Such a centre will not only give the much-needed thrust to
the States education sector but will also go a long way in halting the exodus
of its students to outside institutions for technical education. The State
Government on its part should invite institutions with proven
academic record to set up centres in the region in various disciplines.
Quality education is a must for ushering in overall development of the region.
