You need to go investigate HylaFax for that; Asterisk is not your
prime solution.
Lee; where does he need to go look?

Hi Folks,
about 1 week ago I asked a question about using EXTERNAL Fax/Modems
(RS-232) that can be used as an FXO or FXS.
But I couldn't get to a clear answer yet!
Has anyone used EXTERNAL Fax/Modems to SEND/Recv FAXES?
Can we use them for faxing at least?
Any comments is greatly
In that use case, I would use Hylafax going out the analog modems and not
use Asterisk for faxing. If you need to bring VoIP channels in via Asterisk
connect them to Hylafax via iaxmodem.

From my understanding you can never get voice capabilities from an
external modem connected by serial cable.

For the most part this is true, but it's not entirely true. There are
AT-command-driven full-duplex voice modems (AT+FCLASS=8) out there now.
Asterisk no
.
