[asterisk-users] packet loss stats - how does asterisk know about packets sent % lost ?

Hello, I am just wondering if the statistics from the “sip show channelstats” and “pjsip show channelstats” command are reliable indicators of packet loss. How does asterisk know how many packets *sent* were lost? Does this require RTCP compatible endpoint/phone, or something else?
