I had the same problem
could find a solution until i read to change the way the modules where loaded
(i still loaded zaphfc with modes=1 appended to it). Removing that last one did
the trick for me

tryied
chaning the signalling thing, didnt change
anything, but I think it is not related as I get the messages whereter or not asterisk is running (they start appearing
as soon as I load zaptel)
