If you are seeing the above error using cvs-head files, the problem identified has been resolved becuase there is no zlib-devel package installed. To resolve this issue simply install zlib-devel and re-compile and all willbe good. Thanks to Jer Jer on #asterisk for the assistance.
This issue only comes into play when you do a minimal install following the documentation on wiki.
