How do I stop asterisk when it is in a bad mood? It keeps dialing
extensions and won't listen! I tried kill PID. No go. I don't want to
have to reboot again. Thanks.

Try first to stop it :
asterisk -rx stop now
then killall -9 asterisk

Tried that over and over. Eventually it said it couldn't allocate
any more channels and stopped responding to the keyboard. It was running
in an X terminal and killing the terminal window wouldn't stop it
either. Queue app kept attempting to dial from a previous call with all
kill -9 PID
