It is based on SIP so it can communicate with other SIP devices which have instant messages capabilities such as Xten's Eyebeam or Windows Messenger (5.1 not MSN). I do not think it will work with Asterisk since Asterisk does not support IM as far as I know. It would work with SER just fine thoug
