I had the same problem with my dual Xeon processor and the mistake I was making was that I was fixing the spinlock.h in /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-34.0.2.EL-i686/ and not in /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-34.0.2.EL-smp-i686/ where I actually needed to do it.
Once fixed it in the right place, zaptel installa
