Hi Tom,
What VMware are you using? It just worked for me. (VMware Fusion 3.1.2)
Possibly you have disk options when setting up the VM.

I am trying to set up a VMWare instance from the geni586 image, following
the instructions at http://doc.astlinux.org/userdoc:tt_vmware. When I try to
create persistent storage, either via the GUI or the CLI, I get:
Format of drive /dev/sda failed, use fdisk manually.
