ifconfig wlan0 up returns error "no such device"

This e-mail opens reliably on the Linux 2.0.18 system I am typing
on compiled Sept 8, 1996. All this runs on a 486 DX 2 with an amazing
32 MBytes of Ram :)). RedHat 4.0 or some such with the stock pine e-mail
client.
