I bet it's not an ath9k problem. I bet you're just finding the really
high receive sensitivity of the atheros NICs. :)
Ie, ath9k is not choosing which AP to associate with. I bet that
wpa_supplicant / 802.11 stack is not blacklisting that far-away AP:

I started having this problem just recently. In short, everything is fine,
then no data is received, then after a while, a bunch of data is received at
once,
most tcp connections are not broken, some timed out though.
Wireshark showed that I was still receiving arp broadcasts from the
route

Maybe someone nearby has a CardBus adapter that you can borrow and
use for monitoring, if not a complete laptop.

brcmsmac does not support monitor mode. b43 is claimed to support that,
but I've never tried.
