Yes, it's correct. You can either add that directory to
`TeX-style-private' or move/link the file in a directory present in
`TeX-style-private', the decision is up to you.
It seems not to work.

I just tested, it does not work in GNU emacs 24/auctex 11.88

No, I don't have a clue right now and I don't think XEmacs is intended
to behave differently from Emacs in this regard.
Right now I copy these files in the global style file directory then it
works, so it is really a path

I reply for this problem: AUCTeX searches for style files in the
directories listed in `TeX-style-path'. Actually, this list is built
from other lists
