After installing auctex 11.88 on my Mac (running OS X 10.10.4) I am having a
problem with the “LaTex Formatting and Marking” command. Namely, when I choose

Thanks a lot for your reply! As Tassilo pointed out earlier, the real problem
here is that I am sticking to a very old version of Emacs. The reasons for
doing this are basically two:
1) Since I often write in Spanish, where we have all sorts of accents, I use
x-symbol to be able to see

I hope the attached patch #1 recovers the compatibility of
TeX-activate-region for old emacsens. I checked it against emacs 21.4,
22.3 and 23.4. They all exhibit no error when I mark environment and
section with the respective entries in the menu "LaTeX -> Formatting and
Mark
