Firstly, if Nvda is set to announce page numbers in the dialogue you mention, it should announce whilst typing or editing, and certainly whilst reading. Secondly, if you use the NvdA command nvdA end to read the status bar you can get

ahh yes I did that and it only works when not in browse mode. In other words when I type normally I can not tell when I am at the half way mark of a page or where I am. I wish there was an NVDA addon which played tones that told you
