The proper characterization is that rock is noisier. Noise is harder
to compress

Get a used Vandersteen 2W. I got mine for $500 (it retails for $1200)
and couldn't be happier. Bass is deep and very fast. Excellent for
jazz. Not your typical flabby home theater sub. This one was designed
specifically for music.
Check Audiogon for good deals on this model.
Luck!

If you think his system can't be improved for $1,000 you should be
committed. Are you not currently trying to improve your setup (speakers
in particular) by spending $1,000 on a sub?

Furthermore...I just saw that the OP listens mainly to hard rock. Yeah,
definitely don't spend the $1000 on "improvements". I doubt you will
hear much difference with rock, unless you spend quite a bit more.
However, make sure you stream either FLAC or high bit-rate (e.g. Lame

Yeah I'll second exkcdude, especially since he's heard/had them.
Part of what I failed to iterate, was that if you can get your two
channel system into a dedicated room you might get better performance
and the added benefit of a retreat :)

Interesting. I have almost exactly the same speakers, except I have the
mini-montitors for rear channels. I think you're fine with what you
have. Use the analog outputs (they're good enough) and play music using
your Monitor 9's. I don't think you really need to do anything. Save the
$1000.

If most of your music is 2 channel stereo, like older rock cds, I would
look into a 2 channel reproduction system. You could keep your HT, and
spend the 1k on a 2 channel amp and speakers.
Don't forget to try the analog outs and compare the sound to the DAC in
your receiver...

You might take a look at the AV123 Rocket UFW-10.

For music, you want a sealed (not ported) sub.
I bought a Dayton Titan 10" sub kit from Parts Express for several
hundred bucks. The bigger ones are a little pricier, but might be just
what you want.
You put them together, but it's easy to do (no soldering, mitering,
drilling, etc). Or, you ca

Yes, another recommendation thread, but evidently there hasn't been one
specifically for subs. I want a highly musical sub, don't care about
explosions, special fx, etc., because I already have a sub for that. I
need a sub that will blend in nicely with my 2-way's that go down to
about 50-60 Hz.

Maybe you didn't see the ones I linked to. They are more of a

looking for.

Thanks. Those are good suggestions. I've read about the Swans, but
they're a little big and vertical. Someone suggested the M-Audio BX5A

I discovered yesterday that if you set your album gain tag to +0.001 dB
then Slimserver rounds it down to 0.00 dB and seems to use it reliably,
Unfortunately Foobar seems to round it down before it saves it, I'm not
sure about other taggers, I used JRiver Media Center to do mine.
