All,
just been catching up on the discussions on CDP versus HDD in this
thread and thought that I would just post this snippet from the CD
Paranoia FAQ (http://www.xiph.org/paranoia/faq.html) which kind of
opened my eyes to what is actually involved in a Red Book Audio CD
playback system
I've got to say that I've found reading through this thread
fascinating.
I caught the 'audiophile' bug when I was about 13, when the best I
could do was purchase repaired bits of very non-high end hi-fi from a
shop near my home, purchased with paper-round money.
Over the years my 'upgrade

I agree 100%.
That many listeners appear to be able to hear differences between
different transports
Perhaps OT as he doesn't use a squeezebox, nor slimserver, but still
pretty impressive!

His other audio restorations are also quite slick.

Hmmm. I had what was considered a very good transport (Pioneer Elite

DAC (MF Tri-Vista). The SB3 stock was not 95%, rather more like 60%,
rising to 85% when feeding the Tri-Vista. The Bolder digital only
certainaly an interesting project. some good ideas there too. I'd quite
like to do something like this but with a full HTPC setup instead of
just as a music server.

Yes, quite impressive. Especially the polished finish of the front plate
- amazing. I wonder though why he didn't use a touchscreen instead of
the LCD and touchpad. He could have saved himself a lot of work (not
money though!) had he known about this :)

There are many interestesting points about this project, like the
onboard display and nice finish of the case.
But as an audiophile, I don't think his choice of sound card is going
to be a competition to a squeezebox. I was working on a similar
project, and tried many similary priced soundcards,
But it does shed some light on the McIntosh product (ridiculous!) and
other 'big box' music servers...

It does indeed.
Now, if we had a squeezebox on a PCI card. Then we could make a
high-end audiophile HTPC or music server...

Until recently, I was using an AudioSource Amp Two (80 W/ch) and was
very happy. It also has preamp outputs and volume control for each

Sean, offer SB as an OEM card and attached display, allowing high end
vendors to hook up their own computer innards, PS, drives, and screen
interfaces.
Jetlag,
Care to update us on the late progress of your power supply. BTW, I
was lucky enough to buy the last power-one module from Cascade Surplus
Electronic yesterday. Tony said that someone had bought all the
remaining power supply from his inventory.
Thanks
