The thing is, they seem to have gotten scarce here in the States -- do
they even have US distribution any more? I was interested a while ago
in trying to run down their 5-channel version for a teevee, and had no
luck.

When a SB3 decodes a FLAC (or other lossless format) how is it done? Is
the FLAC decoded to a wav file before being played? How do i know it is
bit perfect? Is there anyway to take the digital output from the Digital
out on the SB3 and write it to a file to compare against the original
wav file?

Also when the flac file is transmitted either wirelessly or via ethernet
cable, do network protocols ensure the file is bit perfect when it
reaches the SB3?
That's ensured by the TCP part of TCP/IP.

To clarify, the suwoofers are somewhat unique in design inn that they
So keeping them is not really an option - even though I have heard
nothing that comes close when they are really singing.
Physics rules here, you can't get real bass from a 6 inch

Alternatively, you could replace your wife ... :-O

Hmmm I think I need to be married for longer than our 1 yr to even
consider that.
I had thought of Meridians - thanks for the other suggestions!

(PS Anyone want a pair of Gradient subs for Quad 63s?)

Well, here's my solution: 3 small boxes and a pair of speakers:-

WAF's in the eye of the Wife (they do at least have Oak sides), but
sound quality is definitely right up there ...

Flac seems absolutely bit-perfect but the gaps. Seems like a bug in the
decoding part leaves away some samples in the beginning of files.
This leads to different kinds of clicks between gapless tracks
sometimes. This bug is already in the official bug-list.

I'd second the recommendation of both the Meridian and ATC speakers.
From a sound quality perspective, although my personal preference would
be ATCs (probably the SCM20 SL Towers, the SCM50s carry a hefty price
tag and are pretty huge), if you're planning to connect straight to the
SB then the
Has anybody used this power supply?

One more question is FLAC decoded by the server on the PC or in
hardware (or firmware?) on the SB3 unit.
With a SB 2 or SB3, FLAC is decoded in the SqueezeBox, reducing
network traffic, contention, lightening the load on the server
and all sorts of good things.
On a SB1, the

FLAC *can* be decoded to wav by the server though if you so desire. i
forget exactly where the options are, but the are in the server
settings somewhere :)

Firmware. The SB uses a small general purpose processor to decode the
data stream, run the screen and handle communications. I believe only
the original SliMP3 used a true hardware MP3 decoder

Wow - a little overwhelmed with all the help!
Will look a little further into the Meridians and the ATCs.
I wouldn't mind keeping the 606's - any suggestions along this line of
thought? Guess I would need a pre-amp too though!
Thanks again

SB3 + Meridians would be the ultimate in simplicity and WAF.

the Sonus speakers do have a lovely finish - but which model and what

Opinions / views (no troll btw - just out of the loop for a while)
Thanks etc

I've always thought Meridian speakers had fairly high WAF, but
they are pretty pricey. Sound great, look good, cost lots. Sigh.

How much do you want to spend?
I drive my Sonus Faber
I think it is called careful purchasing.
Almost without exception I have bought my hi-fi 2nd hand (used) - at
this end of the market people TEND to take care of what they have.
That and a good inspection / audition tends to flush out the dealers /
merchants.
$6,000 = £4,000 - probably £2,500

I found one from Elpac that I thought might be worth a shot. I gather
that from a purist point of view more headroom would be optimal, but is
this ljkely to be better thna a switch mode wallwart?

Sorry I tried to find the answer and I'm aware this is a hot topic.
It seems clear that even the skeptics believe a linear PS will help the
DAC out but I can't see how it would help the digital out. Will it?
I'm not opposed to spending $20 if it would but I'm having a hard time
understanding
As my original long posting on power supplies has gone away, I'll add
this one comment:
When I first got my SqueezeBox, adding a 5 amp regulated lab power
supply made the biggest difference in sound quality of any single
electronics change I'd ever heard to date.
Since then, through a long
